On October 23, the Ministry of Climate and Environment hosted a ceremonial session of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute. During the session, Minister Krzysztof Bolesta presented appointments to new Council members. The Council now includes twenty experts representing diverse fields, such as economics, social sciences, artificial intelligence development, biology, and environmental law, with a specific emphasis on energy and climate law.
The Institute’s core mission is to build a solid scientific basis for environmental protection, supplying critical knowledge to governmental and local authorities as well as businesses, while fostering ecological awareness and encouraging pro-environmental attitudes across society.
With climate change, ecosystem degradation, environmental pressures, and misinformation posing escalating challenges, scientific institutions play a vital role. Society’s current environmental challenges go beyond traditional disciplinary divides, prompting research teams to adopt increasingly interdisciplinary approaches for effective solutions.
The Council’s new membership embodies this interdisciplinary approach, uniting distinguished specialists from fields including environmental engineering, social sciences, law, finance, advanced technology, and artificial intelligence.
“Poland has set ambitious climate and environmental goals. Now is the time to stop chasing the European Union and its member states and start advancing our own proposals and solutions for international discussion. Achieving this requires a robust scientific foundation, grounded in diverse disciplines and supported by reliable data and analyses, which I trust the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute will provide” remarked Minister Krzysztof Bolesta during the ceremony.
Dr. hab. Marcin Stoczkiewicz, the new director of IOŚ-PIB, emphasized the Institute’s responsibility to supply scientific groundwork for environmental policy and actionable knowledge for effective environmental protection, incorporating social, legal, and economic dimensions. “I hope our research and development activities will be primarily practical, directly addressing current challenges and supporting the Ministry of Climate and Environment in reaching its objectives. My goal is for the Institute to become a symbol of quality – a modern center delivering high-standard, reliable analyses and innovative solutions that contribute to robust environmental protection and policy creation” – he added.

“The world today faces profound environmental challenges that require immediate action on global, regional, and local scales. The Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute is crucial nationally, conducting research that supports interdisciplinary approaches to environmental protection, aiding public administration, and increasing public ecological awareness. Continuing research into key environmental resource protection, circular economy initiatives, and achieving climate neutrality is essential. Additionally, I believe the Institute should embrace new challenges, such as valuing ecosystem services and restoring natural resources in alignment with the EU’s Nature Restoration Law. As Chair of the Scientific Council of IOŚ-PIB, I pledge my full support in advancing these ambitious goals” – stated Dr. hab. Monika A. Król, Prof. of the University of Łódź.
